WELCOME TO UMEED
The mandate of the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), GoI is rural poverty
alleviation through programmes directly targeted at the rural poor households.
Within the ‘directly targeted’ category, there are programmes focused on wage
employment and programmes focused on self-employment. The Swarnajayanti Grameen
Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) is the Ministry programme which focuses on
self-employment. This programme was launched in the year 1999, by restructuring
the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP).
“We are hoping Umeed will bring similar success in Jammu and Kashmir as well”,
said Shri Gandhi. “We want to include women in the development process”
WHAT WE DO?
NRLM’s main focus is to stabilize and promote existing livelihoods portfolio of
the poor , in farm and in non-farm sectors. Consumption patterns of the poor
influence well -being, productivity and risk taking ability of the poor. The
business risks, life cycle risks, higher costs for consumption/production and
exploitative terms of trade expose the poor to extreme vulnerability. To cope
with this, poor and vulnerable households pursue diverse and multiple
livelihoods strategies. Interventions have to cut across all these layers.
